Where did Montessori come from?

Montessori (pronounced MON-tuh-SORE-ee) education was founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. Guided by her discovery that children teach themselves, Dr. Montessori designed a "prepared environment" in which children could freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities. Now, nearly a century after Maria Montessori's first casa dei bambini ("children's house") in Rome, Montessori education is found all over the world, spanning ages from birth to adolescence.

Does the curriculum adequately prepare my child for Primary 1?

The curriculum aims to nurture the children holistically so that they are confident, have strong social skills and good foundation in literacy and numeracy. This will lay the foundation for their future learning and facilitate their transition to primary school.

How can I find out what my child is learning?

Parent teaching meeting is held twice a year. The teachers share the child’s developmental progress with the parents and also ideas to support the learning needs of the child. The more parents participate, the better able they are to follow through at home. When parents follow through at home, the child benefits even more because he/ she has a consistent environment in which to grow and develop as a secure, well-adjusted human being.

Are there any spelling quizzes or tests?

At The Heights Academy, children learn ejaan, spelling and 听写 through games and word scrabble. This makes the learning process more enjoyable, and helps them develop a long-term love for reading and writing. As part of our Primary School Preparatory Programme, there will be tests for K1 & K2 to provide the experience of the same in a primary school.
