Most educators and psychologists agree that the single most important period in the development of a person’s intelligence occurs between birth and age six. A child’s mind is absorbent, and his/ her curiosity is at a peak during these early years When properly nourished and stimulated, the child’s mind forms patterns of learning which serve him/ her throughout his/ her life. A Montessori school provides one of the most effective environment in which to guide a child through these critical years.
The first days at kindergarten can, for some parents and children, be a very stressful event. Based on our experiences at The Heights Academy there are however a number of things that can be done to try and make those first days as easy as possible. We have compiled a list of do’s and don’ts that we hope are helpful.

Talk about school positively to your child. Emphasize the fun they will have, the interesting things they will do and the new friends they will make. Show your child photos of the school and the teacher and of course take them on a visit to the school.

Read a book together about school.

Leave your mobile number with the school and ask them to get in touch via SMS/ call to let you know what is happening. Don’t be upset if your child needs to go home early.

Maintain good communications with the school and the classroom teacher. They will help provide advice and give options to help your child settle in. A good parent-teacher partnership is one of the most important success factors in helping your child to settle.

Don’t use school as a punishment or talk negatively about school.

The chances are your toddler will pick up on their parents’ anxiety. Parental anxiety is very normal especially if it is your first child and you have spent the last 2-3 years looking after them on a full time basis. It will take you time to build trust with your child’s class teacher. Whatever your approach, I wish you good luck in your first days and weeks as your toddler settles into their new preschool. And if it takes a bit longer than you hoped for remember that each child is different but they do all settle in the end. A good parent teacher partnership is one of the most important success factors.

Yes. The school and class teacher are to be informed one week in advance of your intended date. Information of whether it will be a class/ whole session celebration has to be communicated clearly.
To withdraw your child from the preschool, termination in writing must be given to the school 2 months in advance or one month’s fee will be charged in lieu of notice. Your deposit will be refunded once the relevant documents and final month’s fees have been received.
